Kolkata, formerly called as Calcutta, was founded 300 years ago and has evolved as an important commercial centre of India. Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is situated on the east bank of river Ganges (called the Hooghly in Kolkata). Kolkata is the centre of human values, hospitality and intellect with home to five Nobel laureates – Ronald Ross, Sir C.V. Raman, Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa and Amartya Sen.

Another major tourist attraction is the Victoria Memorial, which has a museum documenting Kolkata's history. Other important buildings in Kolkata are Belvedere Estate, Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Marble Palace, National Library of India, Raj Bhavan, Shaheed Minar and Writers' building.
