Kanyakumari is located at the southernmost tip of India, where the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea meet. Kanyakumari, a very famous and important pilgrim centre, got it's name from Goddess Kanya Kumari (the youthful form of the primeval energy Shakti: Mother Goddess), the deity of the place.
The temple dedicated to Kanyakumari is located on the seashore. The place is famous for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets specially on full moon day. The beach offers a fabulous sight with multi-coloured sand and there is a lighthouse from where the visitors can get a panoramic view. Spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda spent days in meditation upon a rock off of the coast of Kanyakumari. A memorial built on a rocky promontory in his honour is just about 500 meters off shore and is accessible via ferry.
The Kanyakumari or Kumari Amman temple is dedicated to
Goddess Parvati. According to a legend, here Devi Parvati did penance to
obtain Lord Siva as her husband. This grand temple of Goddess Bhagavathi is
located on the site where three oceans meet: the Indian Ocean, the Bay of
Bengal and the Arabian Sea. This is one of the most picturesquely located
temples of India and attracts tourist from all over the world. The
exceptionally beautiful diamond nose-ring of this deity is famous for its
sparkling splendor. This nose ring is supposed to be visible even from the
sea.
The grand Vivekananda memorial is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian Philosopher, social reformer and spiritual leader. The memorial was built in 1970 and is situated just about 500 meters away from mainland. Swami Vivekananda was supposed to have meditated on the rock on which this memorial is built. A meditation hall and a statue of Swami Vivekananda are housed at the memorial. This memorial consists of two main structures, (i) Vivekananda Mandapam and (ii) Shripada Mandapam.
