Jaisalmer, the desert fortress, is one of the most exotic and unusual cities of Rajasthan and is a major tourist destination of India. Like all other cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer too has its own glorious past to boast about. Jaisalmer, also referred to as the Golden City, is situated amid picturesque Thar Desert and is an important ancient trading centre because of its strategic location on the camel trade routes.
The Havelis and the Forts add beauty to the city and attract people from all over the globe to this beautiful desert city of Rajasthan. It is a heritage city of India famous for the exotic Forts, grand Havelis and monuments the city houses. There are historical monuments scattered all over the city but the main attraction is the Jaisalmer Fort. It was constructed by Rawal Jaisal in the 12th century and is situated on the 80 metre high Trikuta hill, with beautifully carved Jain temples. The city is also known for its old mansions or Havelis that are exquisitely carved from golden-yellow sandstone. There are various other monuments, with distinct and individual architecture with an amalgamation of ancient and the medieval era architecture.

The city of Jaisalmer presents an amalgamation of different forms of architecture pertaining to different eras. Rajputana architecture dominated the ancient times where as the medieval period was the fusion of Rajputana and subtle Islamic architecture. This is the era when most of the Havelis were built.
The most famous Haveli of Jaisalmer is Patwon Ji ki Haveli which is collection of 5 small Havelis. Another Haveli worth visiting is Nathmal Ji ki Haveli where you can witness the continuity in design. Another major Haveli is Salim Ji ki haveli which was built in 1815 and is famous for its unique architecture based on the Peacock.
Jaisalmer Fort
This fort was built by Rawal Jaisal in the 12th century and is also known as "Sonar Quila". It is made of golden yellow sandstone and stands on Trikuta Hill with many Havelis and a group of Jain temples.
Sam Sand Dunes
Sam sand dunes are a major attraction to the tourists which lie in the outskirts of Jaisalmer. One can enjoy visiting these sand dunes on camel back which is the best way of visiting the place. Amidst these sand dunes, The Desert festival is celebrated in the month of February and March.
Safari in Jaisalmer
